Street vendors selling without permits

After further investigation, it came to light that Law Enforcement is actually doing their work to remove street vendors, dealing and selling goods without a permit

The Municipal Law Enforcement were under a magnifying glass by residents this past week as a social media post went viral where a resident stated that they are not doing what they are supposed to do.

After further investigation, it came to light that Law Enforcement is actually doing their work to remove street vendors, dealing and selling goods without a permit.

The municipal spokesperson, Mr Lebo Mofokeng gave the by-laws and explained what the primary duty of these officials are:

“The Municipal Law Enforcement primary duty is enforcing municipal by-laws of which one of them is the Street Trading By-laws. According to the by-laws, every hawker must have a hawker’s license to trade within the boundaries of Emalahleni Local Municipality. Law Enforcement members must ensure that all hawkers around Emalahleni comply with the by-laws,” said Mofokeng.
Regarding the reported incident of this resident, the hawkers did not comply with the Street Trading By-laws. In such cases, the stock is confiscated and stored in a safe place.
“An owner of the confiscated items will be issued with a Section 56 Notice to enable him/her to pay an admission of guilt to the municipality. The stock is stored in a safe place at the municipal properties,” he added.

All those who were left to trade have hawker’s licenses which mean that they comply with our Street Trading By-laws.
