Witbank Aeronautical Association (WAA), the second oldest flying club in South Africa, will be hosting a speed rally.

The speed rally will be held on Saturday, February 1.

Established in 1928 under the leadership of Eric Wells, Witbank Airfield used to be the training grounds for World War 2 pilots.

In total, 385 SAAF, 714 RAF and four allied World War 2 pilots were trained at Witbank from Number 5 air school, which was established in March 1941.

The motto for the air school was, “Wings for Victory”.

Witbank Airfield is also a beacon for aircraft on international flights from the east approaching OR Tambo International airport.

The original airfield in Witbank used to be where the Municipality Hospital is currently situated.

The speed rally on Saturday, February 1 is part of the South African Power Flight Association events calendar, and it is open to the public.

Please join us at the airfield for a fun filled day of high speed flying.

Food stalls will be available for all visitors.

Entrance to the airfield is free.

The aircraft partaking in the event should be taking off at 10:00, and returning to the airfield at 12:00.

There will furthermore be some high speed and highly entertaining flying in the afternoon.
