One dead and one arrested after foiled ATM bombing in Tasbet Park

One suspect was shot dead and the second arrested

A robber was shot dead and another arrested during a foiled automatic teller machine (ATM) bombing in Tasbet Park.

Police was waiting for the robbers after information about the planned ATM bombing was received earlier.

On Tuesday, November 26 all hell broke loose when fire was exchanged by the police and the robbers.

One suspect was shot dead and the second arrested.

Police recovered two firearms, a rifle, a shotgun and ammunition.

The BMW the robbers used was also recovered.

A convenient store at the Caltex Garage in Ga-Nala was not so lucky and had suffered severe damage after a Capitec ATM and dropsafe were blown to pieces over the weekend.

“On November 25 at approximately 01:30 the employees in the convenient store were attacked by 11 males armed with firearms,” said Brig Leonard Hlathi, provincial police spokesperson.

While the staff was lying on the floor, the suspects hurried over to the ATM and set explosives.

It is a miracle that no one is seriously injured as the suspects fired random shots during the robbery.

The robbers got away with cash.

This is the third time this year the convenient store became the target.

Ms Zunaid van Rensburg said they spend R40 000 a month on security in the store.

“It feels like a never-ending battle. With all our security in place the robbers still got in,” Van Rensburg said.

No arrests have been made.
