Hands off of our women

This means that in South Africa, women are five times more likely to be killed due to gender-based violence committed by men

The risk of sexual violence one assumes just by living while female is high.

South Africa is becoming an increasingly unsafe place for women to live in.

The Crime Against Women in South Africa Report by Statistics SA shows that femicide (the murder of women on the basis of their gender) is five times higher than the global average.

This means that in South Africa, women are five times more likely to be killed due to gender-based violence committed by men.

South Africa’s rape statistics are double the country’s murder rate at 53.8 cases per 100 000 people in the country.

This equates to one person getting raped every 13 minutes.

On September 9, a school teacher realised that something was amiss with one of the girls in her class.

This girl always came to school looking like she had been neglected, in old clothing or inadequate clothing.

On this day the teacher approached the girl and asked whether everything was okay at home.

The girl burst into tears and admitted to her teacher that her brother had been raping her repeatedly.

On September 15, a woman resident in Klarinet received a call from her boyfriend asking her to come over to his house.

Once she arrived, she found him intoxicated with a group of his friends.

He told her to go into his house and wait for him.

Once he entered the house, he grabbed her and started pulling her to the bedroom.

She screamed, but her screams went unheard by the group of friends outside (or were purposely ignored).

Her boyfriend then lifted her into the air, put on a condom and proceeded to rape her; all whilst she was screaming her lungs out, hoping for help.

On September 20, a woman was in bed with her boyfriend.

He asked her whether she would like to have sex, but she denied him – stating that she wasn’t in the mood.

Her boyfriend then took a pistol out of his bedside drawer and threatened to shoot her if she did not have sex with him.

The woman complied. After completing the deed, her boyfriend demanded to see her phone and asked whether she was cheating on him.

He was also assaulting her throughout this entire ordeal.

A case of rape was opened at Witbank SAPS for each of these incidents.
