St Thomas support DeafSA

St Thomas hopes to welcome DeafSA Mpumalanga again in the future and commended them for educating the public on hearing loss, deafness, deaf culture and SASL

In light of Deaf Awareness month (September), DeafSA Mpumalanga recently shared Basic SA Sign Language with the children at St Thomas Aquinas School (for the second time this year).

DeafSA’s Provicial Director, Mr Christoper Rodgers Nair, wrote on Facebook: “The kids were so excited with the first session that they requested DeafSA to conduct another training session.”

During this session the Primary School children were entranced as DeafSA Mpumalanga representative, Mr Phillemon Mashaba, taught them how to go about greeting a deaf person and signing the days of the week.

A Grade 7 learner, Mia de Villiers, is fluent in South African Sign Language (SASL) and she said that she had been attending classes once a week (from an outside tutor) and dreams of teaching the Bible to deaf people one day.

St Thomas hopes to welcome DeafSA Mpumalanga again in the future and commended them for educating the public on hearing loss, deafness, deaf culture and SASL.
