Food at school not the reason for ‘poisoning’ of learners

Out of the 12 learners from Nelson Ngubeni Primary School, one learner was very critical and had to be admitted to ICU

Following the death of two, and 12 other learners being admitted to hospital with symptoms relating to food contamination last month, the Mpumalanga Department of Education this week in a media statement said that the food the children received through the feeding scheme at school was found to be safe after it was tested.

Out of the 12 learners from Nelson Ngubeni Primary School, one learner was very critical and had to be admitted to ICU.

Eleven children were treated and discharged on Tuesday, July 30 and the remaining learner who was in the ICU was discharged on August 1.

Mr Bonakele Majuba, MEC of the Mpumalanga Department of Education said the SAPS investigation regarding the snacks bought by learners at different tuck shops is ongoing and the matter now rests within the ambit of the police.
