Autopsies performed on pupils

More information pertaining to the cause of death will be released as the investigation progresses

The autopsies of the two pupils (age six and 11) from Nelson Ngobeni Primary School, who succumbed after allegedly consuming something poisonous on July 29 presumably on their way back from school have been completed.

The post-mortems were conducted in Nelspruit on July 30, although the initial findings have yet to be disclosed due to the ongoing investigations.

There is, however, no validity to the rumours going around which state that the post-mortems revealed that the children had passed away from poisoned popcorn.

More information pertaining to the cause of death will be released as the investigation progresses.

The sequence of events indicate that police were firstly informed of a child who was declared dead at Bonginsimbi Clinic, and 11 others who were admitted to Witbank Provincial Hospital on the Monday.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the police conducted preliminary interviews to establish what had transpired only to be informed that a second learner had also died from similar circumstances.

The police have since registered an inquest docket for investigation purposes to establish the cause of death as well as the hospitalisation of eleven others who were also rushed to hospital after complaining of stomach cramps and were vomiting.

Currently, there are several operational activities that are to be conducted relating to the investigation to which police request space and privacy in order to effectively investigate this sensitive matter.
