Praying for elections

Women from different denominations gathered to pray for peaceful elections at the civic theatre recently.

The Prayer Day for Elections was held on Friday, April 25.

The aim of the prayer day was for peace, safer and successful national elections.
The speakers prayed and motivated the people who attended. They all agreed that they need God to guide them as the country draws closer to elections day, May 7.

They encouraged political leaders to get involved and asked religious leaders guidance in all they do. They said as the country marked the celebration of 20 years of democracy, prayers were needed more than anything else.

They acknowledged that even though the country was faced by a variety of social ills, they hoped for successful elections. They said their task was to pray for and build a moral and just society.

They said the country was a shining example in Africa and the world for its ability to hold peaceful elections since April 27 1994.
Candles for peace, hope and success were lit and the women joined in praying, singing and dancing.

“We pray like the children of Israelites as they crossed the desert to the promised land for safer elections. We are confident that there will be peaceful and fair elections on May 7. We call upon all religious leaders to mobilise their members to vote for parties of their choice during the forthcoming elections. It is only the right thing to do if you love your country.”
