Man falls into manhole next to exposed electricity box

A sad thing happened as an elderly man was walking down the streets in town.

He did not notice that ahead of him was an open drain hole. He walked along the pathway and in a second he was on his knees.
Mr Sani Mlotshwa fell into the hole injuring his knee. He had not been in town for some time and as he normally strolls down Mandela Street.

On Friday, April 11 he was casually strolling along that path and fell into an open drain hole.
The drainage is supposed to be covered by a metal lid. However, the workers at the furniture shop where the hole is, allege that it has been stolen by youths.

“They came and replaced the lid as well as closed this electricity box but days go by and the covers are missing again,” said Lydia Mavimbela, sales consultant at the shop.

Mavimbela also mentioned that they have reported the open manhole to the municipality several times and since the last time they came to replace the lids, the problem has not been solved. “It is unfortunate that an elderly man had to fall into the hole.

Now he hurt his knee and what if he cannot walk properly again?” commented Ms Zodwa Masemola, who also works at the furniture shop.

The municipality replied that they were aware of the recurring problem outside the furniture shop.
“We are working to get covers and repair damaged electricity units,” said municipal spokesperson, Lebohang Mofokeng.
