The officers found the late Const Mgidi’s vehicle trapped underneath the last trailer of the truck with the three bodies trapped inside

“He was such a humble person, cared so much and always went the extra mile,” these were the words of a sad Const Thabang Ntuli, communications officer of Phola Police Station after the sudden passing of a colleague at the Phola Police Station

.

He explained that on Thursday, March 14 at around 00:25 an accident on the Ogies/Balmoral road, near the Phola/Ogies off-ramp claimed the life of three, including a police officer.

The Volkswagen Polo Vivo, belonging to Const Bheki Mgidi was allegedly travelling from Ogies to Phola and the truck was travelling from the off-ramp joining the Ogies/Balmoral road.

“Const Mgidi was driving the vehicle when his vehicle collided with the truck. The driver of the truck did not sustain any visible injuries but Const Mgidi and the two passengers were declared dead on scene. This is a terrible loss for the Phola Police Station,” said Const Ntuli. He added that the accident was attended by colleagues of Const Mgidi. “This is an extremely emotional and difficult time for them, to attend a fatal accident involving one of their colleagues.”

Const Ntuli said that Sgt Sipho Mtsweni and Const Nomthandazo Skhosana received a call about an accident on abovementioned road.

The officers found the late Const Mgidi’s vehicle trapped underneath the last trailer of the truck with the three bodies trapped inside.

The officers managed to call all relevant role players to the accident scene, but the three occupants of the Volkswagen Polo were declared dead on scene by IGAGU Paramedics.

An accident report was opened at the Phola Police Station, as well as a case of Culpable Homicide.

This is still under investigation.

Const Ntuli described the late Const Mgidi as a very humble person with an abundance of knowledge.

“He spoke four languages; he had such a great sense of humour and always went out of his way to help everyone else. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and he leaves a big empty space at the station. We are all deeply hurt by this fatal accident.”

A memorial service was held to celebrate the life of the late Const Mgidi on March 19 at 10:00 at the Unity Reform (Dutch) church in Phola.
