New plant at Highveld Industrial Park

One of these is NOVO Energy; a gas compression station

The once metal-giant, previously known as Highveld Steel and Vanadium, closed its doors just over two years ago.

The giant still standing tall next to the N4- highway, but with no sign of life for quite some time.

This is slowly changing as some smaller businesses have set up plants there, and some parts of Highveld Steel have started up again.

One of these is NOVO Energy; a gas compression station.

It is a R130 million facility that represents the most advanced compressed natural gas infrastructure in the world and will provide cleaner, more reliable and cost-effective energy compared to coal and other petroleum products.

In South Africa’s energy throttled environment, this new facility will play a significant role in helping unlock the country’s power constraints, while reducing carbon intensity, and in so doing support the objectives of the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Gas Industrialisation Programme.

It assists in the considerable environmental negatives associated with the use of coal as a base energy resource in South Africa.

“It’s been reported that the eMalahleni-area has the world’s dirtiest air, and the Mpumalanga province is the global number one hotspot for NO2 emissions. Natural gas, on the other hand, has the lowest emissions of any hydrocarbon fuel source and it’s the obvious choice to transition into a cleaner more sustainable future driven by the gas economy,” said the chief executive officer, Mr Andri Hugo.
