Local youth group received an award for excellence

A local youth group has received an award for the hard and excellent work they have been doing.

Members of Mpumalanga Youth against Climate Change received the Premier’s Youth Excellence Awards (PSYEA) during an event held in Secunda recently.

The group received the award plus a R25 000 cheque for their efforts. The group has been involved in projects or programmes concerning climate change. They have also done presentations at schools and gatherings in and outside eMalahleni.

The purpose of the (PSYEA) Awards is to promote and encourage best practice in public sector. The awards recognise successful and effective service delivery projects and initiatives that have been achieved through the application of Batho Pele approaches, methodologies and tools. The awards provide opportunities for information sharing, lesson learning, partnerships and the replication of successful initiatives. The awards are fitting tributes to individuals and teams whose commitment to the quality delivery service has contributed to the changing the lives of citizens in Mpumalanga.

Initiated in 2001, the awards are funded by the Mpumalanga Provincial Government. The awards have two main categories namely, Batho Pele and youth categories. The awards are implemented in partnership with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA).

There are four sub-categories in the Premier’s Youth Excellence Awards. The Premier’s Entrepreneurship and Job Creation Award aims to reward an entrepreneurial project that has made an outstanding contribution to job creation.

The 26-member group is planning to open an intent café that will use solar panel and other renewable resources of technologies.
“This will help to push the main objective of preaching natural environment consciousness to all community members. Environmental consciousness is the only effective solution that the youth believe will mitigate climate change,” they said.
