Left with a foundation for more than ten years

When Ms Christian Majola (36), saw a foundation being laid in her yard, she was more than happy but her happiness was short lived.

After the foundation was laid, she was left with the foundation in her yard at Emasagweni since 2006. She went to inquire after all the RDP houses were completely built but she could not receive satisfactory answers from the local municipality. He first call was the then Cllr Rebone Mabuza who could not provide answers and her term as a councillor ended.

The next in line was Cllr Jerry Djiana, Cllr Djiana is presently in the mayoral committee but could also not provide answers for the incomplete house; Ms Majola was sent from pillar to post. Ms Majola stated that the present Cllr Zodwa Mlangeni knows about the matter.

“Cllr Mlangeni came with people from the municipality in 2016 and promised that she was going to sort out the problem and that was the last time I saw her. Like the previous councillors I’m still left with a foundation in my yard. My 11-year-old daughter used to play in the foundation and she has grown up now and we are still staying in the leaking shack. When it rains, water just rush in and my children always ask questions as the other children enjoys the comfort of an RDP house.”

Ms Majola said there are other incomplete houses in the area but even the completed RDP houses the owners were not issued with happy letters as its the norm when houses are completed and handed to their owners.

A questionnaire was sent to the municipality to find out about the incomplete houses.

Mr Kingdom Mabuza, municipality communication officer said the ward councillor, Zodwa Mlangeni, says there are five houses which were not completed, but left with only the foundation.

“The Human Settlement Department in the province have made a commitment to complete the building of those houses soon. We appeal to the affected families to be patient,” added Mr Mabuza.
