Changes are starting to be evident as the mayor made several changes in the mayoral committee effective from May 1.
These announcements were made during a council meeting held on Wednesday, April 25 at the council chambers.
The gathering started by the council speaker Busi Hlubane paying homage to those that passed on including the four men that died in an accident at Clewer as well as African National Congress (ANC) stalwart, Zola Skweyiya.
Changes in the mayoral committee are as follow. Councillor Jerry Djiana has been moved from Technical Services to Municipal Public Accounts Committee; MMC Hessie Maseko has been moved from Finance to Development Planning; MMC Cecilia Maraba has been moved from Development Planning to Nkangala District; former MMC in Nkangala District, Mduduzi Nkosi has been appointed MMC for Technical Services and Cllr Pertunia Maseko has been appointed MMC for Finance.
“An assessment was done and after consultation it was then decided that changes have to be made to utilise councillors according to their strength. It is normal in any organisation to continuously evaluate,” said the municipality’s spokesperson Kingdom Mabuza.

Another important item on the agenda was the city’s burning topic currently, the billing system. It was mentioned that the process plan of the billing system was approved last year and on the day of the council meeting (Wednesday) the amended process plan had to be approved.
Democratic Alliance caucus leader, Cllr Naritha Naidu and caucus chairperson, Cllr Lizelle Steyn both enquired about the billing system and how the municipality will go about solving this puzzle.
Cllr Malatjie said support was given and the necessary help will be dispatched in resolving this problem.
“We have taken note and held a meeting to handle the backlogs of the system,” reassured Cllr Malatjie.
The acting municipal manager of the city Sizwe Mayisela added to what Cllr Malatjie indicating that the billing system is high priority. He said the technical team of the service provider have been called and they are on site.
“We agree that we did not do thorough research. We probably should have kept the old system running as we tried out the new system. However the billing system will be sorted,” explained Mayisela.
With these plans in the pipe line and some implemented, will the council end up being in tip top shape?
