A Domestic Violence Summit was held on Thursday, 26 April at Hermansdal Landgoed just outside eMalahleni.

Police members from all over Mpumalanga were invited to join this event. Amongst the audience was a member from the Emalahleni Local Municipality Cllr Derick Shkosana. He stated that the local municipality wants to be there when the battle against domestic violence is won.

Speakers addressed the audience at the summit explaining the effects and causes of social violence. The dangers and signs of domestic violence were also explained and advice on what to look for was given.

Lt Col Wendy de Jager explained that domestic violence doesn’t start with a broken arm or a blue eye.

“Change happens slowly but surely,” she said.

She also explained where to start when you feel that you need to escape from an abusive relationship or household.

Lt Col Anya Chrissopoulos explained the effects of homicide suicide within the police force and signs to look for.

She ended her speech with the following quote, “If you have to hurt other people in order to feel better, you are an extremely weak individual.”

This summit was designed to raise awareness of domestic violence and to give police the necessary tools to deal with this matter.

The summit was a great success and all who attended learned a lot. Local karate sensei Filipe Houndalas gave a demonstration on how to escape difficult or abusive situations.
