Last day on earth spent helping another

For a victim living in Francois Street, he did not know that when he woke up, this would be his last day.

Friday the 13th is known as a bad luck day. For a victim living in Francois Street, he did not know that when he woke up, this would be his last day.

The ‘Good Samaritan’ wanted to assist a man whose motor bike broke down. Mr Theo Luus, responder for SACCW (South African Community Crime Watch) related the happenings of that unfortunate night:

“I heard the call on the open channel and because I was in the area, I responded. When I entered Francois Street, I saw a man lying next to the road and I immediately got out the car and felt for a pulse on his left arm. There was nothing and I knew it was priority four.”

He added that shortly thereafter, residents from across the road shouted and asked whether he was from the police. He said no, identified himself and they asked if it was safe to come out. They said that they heard between four and five shots.

They mentioned that they saw a white vehicle fleeing the scene and saw the man lying there next to the road. Emergency services responded to the call on the Zello open channel.

The scene where a person was shot in Francois Street on Friday, April 13.

“ER24 were the first ambulance on scene and shortly thereafter another ambulance arrived. They went to work on the patient and other members from the SACCW arrived. We then started to move the vehicles, blocking off the road and to make space for when the police arrived,” said Luus.

He added that while they waited, two males and one lady approached him and said that they were involved in some way, and explained:

“The one guy said that it was not his fault, he was in the street when his motor bike did not want to start. He said that the victim stopped next to him in a white Volkswagen Golf GTI to help. He added that the victim got out of his vehicle and assisted to get the bike going again. As soon as the bike was up and running again, the victim wanted to get back into his car when I heard the shots. The bystander was just a few metres away. He added that he saw the vehicle’s reverse lights come on and that was when he ran away,” Luus said.

Luus said that he saw three gunshot wounds, one in the head, one in the chest and another a bit lower towards the stomach- area.
