Install tight security features in your car

It seems like older cars are now being targeted by thieves.

As from January this year, a high number of old model motor vehicles have been stolen.

On Saturday, March 17 a light blue Toyota Tazz was stolen at Bethal Street at Model Park. The car’s registration number is DPC 001 MP, the direction the car took after it was taken is unknown.

Maureen Scheepers from the South African Crime Watch Witbank (SACCW) confirmed that the number of older car models that are being stolen is on the rise ever since the year started.

What is more heartbreaking is that none of these vehicles are fitted with alarm systems, tracking devices and some are not insured.

Should you spot this motor vehicle, please contact your nearest police station.

“We would like to inform the public that owners of such older model vehicles should take note of this trend and try to install additional security in their vehicles,” said Scheepers.

The SACCW’s Witbank Operations Coordinator mentioned that these security features could make a difference in preventing the vehicle from being stolen or when stolen, having a greater chance of recovery.

Here are general tips to use to ensure that your car is safe.

Ensure that your vehicle is locked; Park in areas where car or security guards are available; Ensure your anti-theft devices are activated and in working order; Do not leave valuables in view in your vehicles; Be vigilant of your surroundings when parking your vehicle; If you don’t know your vehicle registration number by head, write it down and keep it in your wallet or purse. In the event of theft, it is important to give full vehicle details to officials immediately for a better chance of recovery; Take pictures of your vehicle and save those photos.

Should the Tazz be spotted anywhere or if anyone has any information on the vehicle, please get in contact with Scheepers on 082 565 6770 or David Wessels on 072 777 3012.
