Fireworks and lost dogs to enter the New Year

Law enforcement had their hands full with complaints from citizens who feared for the safety of their pets.

Fighting fireworks is something that the SACCW (South African Community Crime Watch) made their new years resolution.

They started this at the end of last year in a meeting with sector leaders from the SACCW Neighbourhood Watch as well as members from the police, municipality, traffic department, law enforcement and the eight legal distributors of fireworks.

This took place on Tuesday, December 19 at the fire brigade grounds.

Here a decision was made to ban the selling and discharging of fireworks on New Years Eve.

The decision to sell fireworks was then later over ruled by the court after business owners, who had already bought stock, took it further. But the banning of discharging of fireworks still stood.

WITBANK NEWS asked the public for their comments, when this decision was brought to our attention and unhappiness flourished.

Concern for pets was the main priority and even though the fireworks may have not been discharged in the Emalahleni Local Municipality area, popping sounds filled the air as we reached the New Year.

Law enforcement had their hands full with complaints from citizens who feared for the safety of their pets.

Six arrests were made by the police for dealing in explosives without a valid licence.

Ms Dina Rademeyer got home on Monday morning, 1 January and saw that her dog was not outside as usual.

“As I opened the door, the dog jumped on me and was covered in blood. I assume it was because of the fireworks that he chewed through our trellidor to get inside the house. It is a Boerbull so he’s not a timid dog by nature. But the fireworks must have been something terrible for him to go to such lengths to get inside the house,” she said on Tuesday, January 2.
