Water pipe repairs lead to shooting

A municipal supervisor was shot dead over the weekend whilst overseeing water pipe repairs in Old Coronation.

The 63-year-old Mr George Kolebe was allegedly shot by a resident of the informal settlement on Saturday, December 2. He died in hospital on Monday, December. 4.

Thushanang extensions and the surrounding informal settlements including Old Coronation were experiencing water supply outages due to the damaged bulk feeder line near Old Coronation.

Mr Kolebe and his team of four were working on this problem when the incident occurred.

According to Witbank Police they came upon a group of people surrounding an injured man on the ground. They spoke to one of his colleagues who informed them that they were four workers on duty, busy working on the waterline when a man came towards them and shot their supervisor.

The police were told by bystanders that the accused was allegedly under the influence when he shot Mr Kolobe.
The suspect was arrested on the scene and the firearm that was used to shoot Mr Kolobe was confiscated.
According to Emalahleni Municipality spokesperson, Mr Kingdom Mabuza, “The leaking pipe, which affected many areas with water provision, needed to be lifted and supported with a log so as to allow the welder to seal it. Mr Kolebe went to fetch a log which was lying nearby when a member of the community irresponsibly drew his firearm and shot him.”
