Two men were robbed after they both withdrew large amounts of money, one from a bank, the other from an ATM.

On July 6 Mr Simon Mdhlovu went to the ATM situated in Tasbet Park to make two withdrawals.

He first withdrew R5 000 from the ATM and proceeded to count it, he then drew another R4 500 and while counting the second withdrawal he was approached by three men.

One of the three men drew a firearm and pointed it at Mdhlovu, demanding that he hand over the money he was counting.

Mdhlovu quickly handed them the money, the three suspects fled on foot towards the nearby taxi rank.
Mdhlovu was contacted but refrained from commenting regarding the robbery.

On July 5, a 34-year-old man went to draw R3 900 from the bank and was robbed. While walking down Mandela Street he heard a man speaking Zulu to him, he turned towards the voice and felt a gun at his side. He was then instructed to get into a grey Nissan Tonner.

Be careful when drawing large amounts of money, or counting your money at an ATM.

The man complied with the suspect’s demands and sat alongside another suspect in the vehicle. The men then drove with the 34-year-old man towards Ogies where they robbed him of the money and his cellular phone and left him in the open field there.

“When withdrawing money, immediately put it in your pocket or put it away safely without displaying it, which may draw the attention of nearby criminals resulting in you being robbed,” said Sgt David Ratau, Witbank Police communications liaison.

He added,

“We advise the community not to withdraw large amounts of money but rather make transfers via EFT or card transactions.”
