The DA will write an urgent letter to eMalahleni municipal manager, Mr Theo van Vuuren, on how he plans to address the sewage spill in Ogies, eMalahleni, which has tainted the town for several months.

DA reported that it is unacceptable for van Vuuren to cite that the municipality only has one vehicle for the entire sanitation department, as a valid reason for not dealing with the issue speedily. They feel that Mr Van Vuuren needs to be held accountable for the current state of the municipality.

“For years, eMalahleni Municipality has battled with many sewage spills due to the municipality’s poor infrastructure and ongoing service delivery woes. As a result, Theo van Vuuren should have made equipping the sanitation department with all the necessary tools his top priority, instead of allowing corruption to deepen. The municipal manager must ensure that he safeguards the health of residents in Ogies from various diseases like cholera, dysentery or typhoid fever that could arise from the ongoing sewage spill. The police station, nearby homes and road users in the area are all affected by the unbearable stench and often times, people have to zig-zag through raw sewage in order to get to their destinations,” reads a statement from Cllr Kindross Silaule, DA councilor in eMalahleni Local Municipality.

“If van Vuuren really cared about the residents of Ogies, he would apply the same dedication to addressing the municipality’s failing sanitation department as he did to attempting to redirect service delivery money to purchasing a R1.5 million luxury vehicle for the executive mayor. Under van Vuuren’s leadership, the dignity and quality of life of the people of eMalahleni continues to deteriorate. This could all have been avoided if the ANC was prepared to act against maladministration and possible corrupt activities within its own ranks. As Municipal Manager, van Vuuren is mandated to urgently address the ongoing sewage spills before the situation further exacerbates,” added Cllr Silaule.
