My backyard is a mess

The Windell household has been swamped in sewage due to a blocked drain.

The Windell household has been swamped in sewage due to a blocked drain.

Ms Sandra Windell explains that their home is situated at the bottom of the street in Eugene Marais Street, Extension 8 and that she suspects that the sewage mains has clogged up, causing the street’s sewage to wash up into her back yard.

Raw sewage flows past the Windell’s back door and down the driveway.

“There are condoms and sanitary towels washing up, it’s disgusting,” said Ms Vanessa Venter, her sister who was visiting at the time.

“We can’t even get out the back door and it’s a health risk for the children not to mention the stench,” said Windell.

Ms Sandra Windell holds her breath walking past the sewage flowing outside her back door.

According to Windell a representative from the Municipality has been at the house and told the family that the drains are blocked and that they need to dig it out, this was last week Tuesday.

Mr Kingdom Mabuza, Emalahleni Municipal spokesperson said that their team was not aware of the sewage problem at Eugene Marais Street and that it has now been brought to their attention.

“They promised to attend to it without any further delay,” he said.

A mains block is believed to be the main cause of the sewage spewing up from the drain.

“Once again, we would like to apologise to residents who are inconvenienced because of such situations. The Emalahleni Local Municipality teams in various directorates are working around the clock to deliver services and maintain the infrastructure which is ageing and under pressure,” he added.

Notice received from the Emalahleni Municipality on Wednesday May 24 detailed that the issue had been resolved on Tuesday May 23.
