Social grant beneficiaries scam warning

Some beneficiaries have received calls from fraudsters pretending to be SASSA officials, threatening and demanding Identity document numbers, SASSA card numbers and pin numbers.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is warning beneficiaries to be vigilant by not disclosing personal information to strangers who are trying to defraud them by using the social grants review process.

Some beneficiaries have received calls from fraudsters pretending to be SASSA officials, threatening and demanding Identity document numbers, SASSA card numbers and pin numbers. These fraudsters threaten that if you do not comply, the social grant payment will be cancelled.

The scam is more prevalent in the Nkomazi area and in some parts of Mpumalanga province. They are mostly targeting the elderly and people with a disability.

This is the cell phone number, 076 1129185, reportedly used by the callers. SASSA has advised those beneficiaries to report the matter to the police, as this is a criminal activity. SASSA is urging all beneficiaries not to reveal their personal information to people who claim to be SASSA officials. Beneficiaries must note that these fraudsters want to duplicate SASSA cards and withdraw their money before they collect it.

Beneficiaries must remember the following:

*SASSA will not phone any beneficiaries reminding them about the review, but use only the registered postal service to send a notification of social grant review.
*SASSA officials will not threaten or demand personal details.
*Social grant reviews take place at SASSA offices only.
Beneficiaries must not hesitate to contact the Toll free number: 0800 60 10 11 from 08:00 – 16:00 during week days Monday – Friday
