Van Vuuren and team will meet with Eskom on Monday

The power house has given the municipality ample time to pay up their outstanding debt

The news that Eskom is going to pull the plug in Emalahleni Local Municipality came at no surprise.

The power house has given the municipality ample time to pay up their outstanding debt, but to no avail.
Reason for the account skyrocketing can be traced back to the winter months wherein the use of electricity escalated.

Add to that the interest on the outstanding debt and consumers, including Eskom, not paying their bills, and you have a major disaster.

In terms of the regulatory framework Eskom issued their final notice allowing them to legally start interrupting bulk supply on Thursday, February 16.

“However, the negotiation process with Eskom is still proceeding and after our interactions today both parties are still eager and committed to reach a sustainable solution. We are also in discussions with the Provincial Treasury who will be providing additional support to the municipal finance directorate over the following number of months. This support will be further explored on Monday, February 13 and will also include support to resolve the outstanding issues on the audit report,” said Municipal Manager Mr Theo van Vuuren.

Together with the mayor, Cllr Lindiwe Ntshalintshali and the finance team, Van Vuuren will again be meeting with Eskom management to try and come to an agreement.

“I know that this is not an easy time for anyone with the danger of power disruptions a reality, but, please remain positive and those who are still not attempting to settle their arrears, start doing so for the sake of the broader community. I am confident that we will reach an agreement. However, please note, unless we follow through on all the measures we discussed and totally change the payment culture and correct those who are still not on the billing system the reprieve will be short lived and during the coming months, especially winter, we may be in trouble again,” Van Vuuren said.
