Guard shot, businessman robbed

As one of the robbers fled he fired his gun in the direction of the security guard.
An armed robbery occurred on Saturday November 12 in Opperman Street.

Mr Dawood Amod, a local businessman, had locked up his business for the day and was making his way past the security gate situated alongside the road.

“I normally take the security guard a cool drink and some chips every day when I lock up, as I was busy doing so I saw a car driving in my direction it was going very fast. It stopped on the opposite side of the road and two guys got out the vehicle and came running towards me,” he recalls.

One of the armed robbers ran to the left window of his car, the other robber ran to the right window, both began banging on the windows of the car.

“I put my hands up and opened the passenger door for them, he reached for the bag next to me then made his way back to their car, the other guy pointed a gun at me and pulled my keys from the ignition throwing them away from the car” said Amod.

He recalls how as the robber ran back to the car he turned and fired off a single gunshot in the guard’s direction.
The guard was shot in the face, the bullet penetrated the guard’s chin and exited through his cheek.

“A passerby called for an ambulance and police, another passerby came forward and mentioned that the vehicle was a silver Honda hatch-back with a Natal registration,” he said.

Emergency services attended to the injured guard and transported him to Life Cosmos Hospital where he was treated for his gunshot wound.

“It was a very traumatising experience, I am just glad that the guard will be alright and is okay,” said Amod.

The guard underwent surgery and is on his way to recovery.

“We went to visit him on Sunday and he is looking a lot better,” said Amod.

He went on to say that the bank suggested that they upgrade their security by installing a drop safe which will reduce the risks of transporting money.

“We have decided to take the bank’s advice and will have one installed on the premises,” said Amod.
