Groom critical after stabbing

Eventually the suspects caught up to Lumvulo and stabbed him in the back, neck, and ear, almost severing his jugular vein and puncturing his lung.

A 19-year-old is in a critical condition in eMalahleni Private Hospital (ePH) as he fights for his life after he was stabbed. On Saturday night, July 2 at around 20:00 Mr Lucky Lumvulo and another groom went to buy airtime at the local tavern.

Four suspects pulled a knife on them and they ran in different directions.
Eventually the suspects caught up to Lumvulo and stabbed him in the back, neck, and ear, almost severing his jugular vein and puncturing his lung.

The other groom saw everything that happened and ran to him while phoning for help.
The owners of Elvier Stables, where he worked, responded to the call from the other groom and called Legacy Emergency Specialists.

The ambulance arrived within minutes of the call and they started working on the seriously injured Lumvulo who just lay on the ground.

Paramedics struggled to keep Lumvulo conscious as he had lost so much blood.
He was loaded into the ambulance and rushed to eMalahleni Private Hospital for further treatment.
In the casualty unit his heart stopped, they started Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and they managed to resuscitate him.

Lumvulo was rushed into theatre where they performed emergency surgery to stabilise him. Once Lumvulo was stabilised he was transferred to Witbank General Hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“He was transferred as his family and his employer couldn’t raise enough funds for him to go to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as a private patient,” said Ms Lariska Bezuidenhout owner of Elvier Stables.

While Lumvulo was at eMalahleni Private Hospital he received eight units of blood.
Lumvulo is currently in a stable condition and breathing on his own now.

“He will probably suffer long term consequences like hearing loss, speech impairment and loss of some facial movement and will require specialist treatment later on,” continued Bezuidenhout.

“We would like to raise funds to help pay the outstanding bills as he was treated as a private patient to stabilise him, then we would like to thank Legacy Emergency Specialists for their excellent work. Their quick response was lifesaving,” said Bezuidenhout.
