“I know Donovan and his dad are together,” A trip to Kosi Bay ended in a tragedy for two families.

A trip to Kosi Bay ended in a tragedy for two families.
What was meant to be a road trip to Kosi Bay to get a holiday house ready for upcoming breakaways left the family of Donovan Roberts and Brian Boynton shattered.

Donovan (34) died in an accident on June 14 just outside Pongola.
Brian (33) is in hospital and there are fears that he would never be able to walk again.
The accident happened just after 16:00. It is believed that the wheel of Donovan’s Land Cruiser came off.

“The Land Cruiser tipped on its side, skid along until it came to a halt against a tree,” said Ms Lisa Hancke, Donovan’s sister.

She said Donovan died of extensive head injuries.
Lisa said they were pulling a trailer with building materials. The two friends had a house together in Kosi Bay and they were planning to fix it up.

Clouds covered her eyes when she tried to capture who her brother was, “Lively, spontaneous, the best father for his two children, Donovan was life…”

Donovan and the love of his life, Jeanine was going to get married on September 24. They had two children Donald, who was born on March 1 and Danelle (9).

On the day Donald was born, Donovan wrote on Facebook:

“Today 3 years ago my dad passed, 3 years later on the same day my beautiful son was born. And I’m proud to honour him with my dad’s name. Baby Donald John Roberts welcome my boy. U bring joy to this sad day for us.”

Donovan’s dad, Donald (55), died on the Kleinkopje Road. Roberts hit a puddle of water in the road and lost control of his vehicle which rolled into the bushes. Shortly afterwards he phoned Donovan, told him about the accident and assured his son he was fine. Donovan then rushed to the scene of the accident. Just then Mr Johannes Nkosi hit the same puddle of water and hit Roberts who was standing next to his bakkie, waiting for Donovan.

“I know Donovan and his dad are together,” Ms Lynnie Roberts, Donovan’s mom said heartbroken.

On Facebook a friend Claire Snyman wrote this about Donovan,

“You were an amazing person full of laughs and jokes, always the life of the party. You are going to be sorely missed. Our hearts are broken. I can’t be more thankful for all the fun times we have had together. You were such a good person always willing to help never would say no in any time of need…”

“That was Donovan, always willing to give, never expecting anything in return,” Ms Roberts said.

Brian has been moved to Life Westville in Durban.
His mom, Ms Sonja Roux said the eighth spinal vertebra in Brian’s back has moved and the ninth vertebra shattered. Pieces of the shattered vertebra are lodged in Brian’s marrow.

“Brian has accepted the fact that he might not walk again,” Ms Roux said.

Ms Vlooi Boynton, Brian’s wife said they are grateful for each and everyone’s donations, support, faith and prayers.

“The opportunity you all give him to be a father, husband and friend is irreplaceable he sends his love and respect to all,” Vlooi said.

Donovan grew up in Ga-Nala, where he also went to Kriel High School. He stayed in eMalahleni.
Donovan’s funeral took place on Wednesday, June 22.
