House in a dumping site and flooded

Ms Elizabeth Marobela is tired of having to stay near an illegal dumping site and having water coming into her house. Ms Marobela moved into Empumelelweni in 2012 and encountered problems in 2013 when residents started dumping near her house. At first according to her it was a small heap but it grew into a large heap forcing a road to be closed.

In December last year municipality removed part of the heap but after that the residents continued with their dumping.

“I was told by Cllr Timothy Lukhele that the area is earmarked for a main road but it has taken so long to construct that road. Not only do I have a dumping problem also water comes into my house every time it rains. I tried opening a furrow but the dumping is preventing the water to flow through. I have also posted photos to Cllr Lukhele showing water flooding my house. The floor of my house and goods inside my house has been damaged,” stated Ms Marobela.

Ms Marobela explained that she had to move her two children to stay with relatives as they cannot stay in that house. There is an abandoned house nearby which is used a safe heaven for criminals that also is a concern to her and she feels that something must be done about it.

Cllr Lukhele confirmed that the matter was reported to him and waste management of the municipality went on Wednesday, March 16 to the area to see the problem.

Dumping near the house of Ms Elizabeth Marobela of Empumelelweni and this illegal dumping has been going since 2013 when residents started dumping near her house.

“Even though we are faced with challenges, the dumping will be removed in that area. We have challenges of equipment at the municipality but as soon as they are available the dump will be removed. We appeal to our community to pay for their services so that municipality can deliver service to them. People must stop dumping illegally as well,” said Cllr Lukhele.
