A lot of the residents living in those poor conditions have a story to tell about the harsh condition they are living under. They say this has been going for some times now.
It is not clear as to where the source of the sewerage is, but it comes across the railway line in the CBD. Ms Lekate Sinong said she arrived in February this year and has been living in her one room shack and the stench is unbearable especially during the night. “What can one do in this situation? The dirty, smelly water has been flowing for the past three weeks. During the day it is well and good but at night its bad, very bad.”
Some of the residents in the low lying areas were found trying to open a trench so that the water can flow through but they said it was very difficult to dig in the hard soil. They hope the water will flow to the other side of their area.
“We have no water or electricity, but we can live with that since we choose to stay here. But the sewerage flowing here is a concern for our health especially that of our children because some of them play in the dirty and smelly water. We have no choice because some of us are unemployed and make a living by selling goods. We get water from communal taps in the other section of Old Coronation and most of us use paraffin for cooking and heating ourselves,” they stated.
Mrs Lucy Thobela said she had to put concrete before putting a foundation of her shack and that prevented the sewerage water coming inside her shack.
A community leader said they will be holding a community meeting to find a way forward in their problems.
