Residents and community leaders of Old Coronation were shocked when a man was found dead in his shack.

Mr Daniel Chauke, believed to be about 40 years old, stays alone in his shack in Lekazi Section of Old Coronation. His landlord, Mr Joseph Lebambo said he last saw him on Sunday, September 6 after coming back from collecting his treatment at Witbank Hospital.

“One could see that he was very weak and he confirmed that he was very sick. He occasional fetched his treatment from hospital but he was not getting any better,” said Lebambo.

Lebambo said Chauke, believed to be from Mozambique, had friends but now they were struggling to find them.
Neighbours found Chauke dead on Wednesday, September 12 while Lebambo was away for some days. After noticing that Chauke not did come out of his shack, they forced open the door and found the deceased lying on the floor.

“We started phoning the police on Wednesday, they promised to come but sent two officers on Thursday who said they would send the pathology van later, but they never did. We phoned again and on Friday we decided to ask a funeral undertaker to collect the body. We even phoned ANC regional office and the ward councillor was also contacted. We tried finding the friend who used to visit him but failed,” said a community leader.

A funeral undertaker collected Chauke on Friday evening.
