Cars stoned during highway protest

A number of motorists sustained damage to their cars when stones were hurled at them on the N4.

Motorists travelling on the highway were stoned at about 06:00 on Wednesday, August 27. A bus was burned on the highway as well.
Mr Johannes Joubert was furious after his car was stoned during the protest recently.

After Joubert’s car was stoned, he said he tried to report the matter at Witbank Police but was told to go to Vosman Police Station.
Joubert said: “There was only one officer at the station and I was told to wait until 19:00. I was angry and furious about the poor service in this city.”

Joubert also mentioned that his wife was sick, and he only wanted to open a case for insurance purposes, but apparently the officers did not understand.

Police spokesperson, Captain Klaas Maloka, said it is possible that other officers were not at the charge office but at the crime office or other offices.

Mr Bennie Robson was also a victim. He was travelling from eMalahleni to Kusile and opposite Highveld a bus was burning in the middle of the highway. Robson saw stones and branches on the road. He said about 50 metres from the bus protestors were lying next to the road and they stoned his bakkie.

His rear window was damaged and some body parts of his bakkie were also damaged.
“These people were very organised and were very aggressive as they hit our cars. They attacked about 40 cars, I saw one woman who was bleeding and one could see that she was hurt. She was stoned through her window. The police only stopped cars coming from Pretoria side when we were on the highway.”

Robson said the previous day at about 11:00 cars were also hit on the highway.
“What if I was travelling with my wife and children and the people attacked us?” wondered Robson.

The cost to fix his car is more than R11 000.
