Sewage flows freely at Ackerville Flats

Some residents in Ackerville Flats said they had enough of sewage flowing freely in their yards.

A resident in the area, in Block 6, said the sewage had been flowing for the past six months and has been reported several times. The residents claim that municipal workers came and fixed the problem temporally and left.

“We have had to live with this situation for the past six month and the workers said they needed a bigger pipe to solve the problem permanently. They said the smaller pipe cannot now carry the load that is why it is blocked,” the residents said.

One of the affected residents said he was even considering hiring a private company to fix the problem but his problem is that it will be too costly to put bigger sewerage pipes.

“We have children and the smell is unbearable even to us as adults. Something needs to be done before somebody gets sick. We do not know what to do now because of the problem,” said one of the residents.

Councillor Taylor Pookgoadi said he was aware of the problem and it has been reported to the municipality.

“Municipality is working on it to find what really is the problem. It might be possible that there were illegal connections without notifying the municipality or something else in the sewer line. Soon after the problem has been identified the problem will be fixed,” explained Cllr Pookgoadi.
