A cash-in-transit guard was robbed in Ga-nala while making his way back to the armoured car. The armoured vehicle was parked outside a shopping centre on August 18 in the afternoon while doing the rounds.

The guard was carrying a case with an undisclosed amount of money out of the shop when he was fired upon. The guard ran to take cover while an exchange of gunfire took place between the armed robber and security. According to Kriel SAPS, the robber managed to escape with the case of money although no one was injured.

The robbery is one of several crimes reported to Kriel SAPS over the past week.

On Saturday, August 16 a man was robbed on his way to work. According to police the victim accepted a lift to Rietspruit. The two men, who picked him up, drove onto a gravel road where they stopped and held the victim with a gun. They robbed him of R450 and his bank card. He was left stranded in the field before finding his way back to town where he reported the incident to the authorities.

“The community is warned to avoid hitchhiking as it could cost them their lives. Rather use public transport,” said Kriel SAPS spokesperson W/O Emmarancia Kgosana. The police also arrested 11 suspects for various crimes such as robbery, assault, burglary, and theft.

The police are asking for any information that would lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. Any person with information can contact Kriel SAPS on 017 648 2266/7.
