‘Customers’ appear to be robbers in recent business robberies

When the employee accompanied the would-be robber to the aisle, he proceeded to take out a firearm and threaten the staff with it.

Robbers are a given in the city and this weekend has been no exception.

On Thursday, June 1 a business in Watermeyer Street has been targeted by one armed suspect when he ordered the staff of the store to the storage room.

The suspect wearing black jeans and a purple jersey entered the shop seeking assistance at the till point. The man then took out a firearm and pointed it at the clerk and demanded the cash in the register.

The suspect then took clothes and cash and fled the store.

After a few minutes in the store room, workers noticed it was quiet and exited the back room to find the suspect has fled the scene.

On Saturday, June 3, two businesses on Mandela Street were the next targets for robbers.

In the morning hours, a business in Mandela Street was the victim of a robbery when an unknown robber appeared to be a customer held up the business at gunpoint.

According to employees of the shop, the unknown male approached one shopkeeper and asked for batteries for his solar system.

When the employee accompanied the would-be robber to the aisle, he proceeded to take out a firearm and threaten the staff with it.

The alleged robber instructed the employees to lie down on the floor and not make a sound.

The robber then exited the store for a short while and came back with three more suspects who were waiting outside the establishment.

The robbers proceeded to tie the hands of the staff with their shoelaces and take items from the store such as batteries and solar panels.

The robbers also took an undisclosed amount of money and cellphones.

In the third instance also taking place on Saturday, June 3, a well-known clothing shop in a shopping centre was targeted late afternoon around closing time.

According to one of the employees, Thuli Lusenga who was there during the robbery the suspect entered the store and took some items.

When the cashiers called the customers to pay for their items seeing it was near closing time, the suspect ignored them and waited until all the customers have left the store.

“When the other customers were gone, the robber came to the till point and had a firearm in his hand. He requested one employee to empty her till and said that we must act normal,” said Lusenga.

The shop assistant also said that the suspect threatened that he will pull the trigger and that the money is not personally theirs and that the shop workers should not act stupid.

“He had a black cap and a surgical mask on. He also took money from three tills that were operating at that time. I could see he had a metal thing in his hand that appeared to be a firearm,” said Lusenga.

When the robber was done, he instructed staff to lie down on the ground so he could go.

The suspect then fled on foot.

Luckily no one was injured in any of the instances.
