Traffic at Klarinet railway crossing is going off the rails one hour at a time

Motorists in the Klarinet area refuse to board the ‘frustrating’ train crossing in the area as they regularly have to deal with prolonged and chaotic traffic.

The railway crossing in Klarinet is causing a train wreck of frustration for residents who regularly deal with chaotic traffic to and from home.

Vehicle accidents are enough to cause a headache with their resulting chaos on the roads.

The headache appears to pass even to road users who wish to travel to work and home over the railway in Klarinet.

Road users are tired and frustrated with hours of traffic and standstills at the railway if the train is stationary or an accident causes a hold-up.

Making use of alternative routes is to no avail for some residents.

Some explained that driving around Jackaroo is not a better alternative, as truck breakdowns occur on the road and land them in a similarly frustrating traffic situation.

Travelling around Ferrobank is also not a better route to a solution for some as the road does not lead to their homes.

The Verena Road is by no means a last resort, as the road is full of truck traffic when residents and workers wish to travel home and to work.

There is also an extra dirt road driven out next to the tarmac road from Klarinet that adds to the frustration as drivers push in front of each other just before the railway.

Trucks also appear to fuel the frustration even more from about 15:00 in the afternoons when travelling over the railway during rush hour traffic from all directions.

“The traffic experienced is unlike ordinary traffic in the city as it endures for hours, sometimes even into the night, resulting in us arriving home late and being on the road in unsafe conditions. Not only our lives are in danger, but also those of traffic officials when they try to regulate the traffic,” said a concerned motorist.

Chairperson for the Witbank Community Police Forum, Ms Madelon Troskie, explained that the issue is especially prominent on Fridays and at the end of the month from about 15:00 as reported to the forum by residents.

Truck traffic built up on Verena Road.

According to some road users, the ‘railway issue’ is also experienced early morning and afternoon.

The message and plea of the community are clear: It is time to build a bridge over the railway lines.

The spokesperson for the municipality, Mr Lebo Mofokeng, was contacted for comment regarding the above issue, but no response was received before print.
