Ecufe march to Emalahleni Local Municipality for better job opportunities

Emalahleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Clr Conny Nkalitshana commended members of Ecufe for successfully executing a peaceful march.

Members of Emalahleni Community Uprising for Employment (Ecufe) gathered outside the mayoral offices in attempts to end corruption, among other issues.

The organisation outlined that the matter of job opportunities must be taken seriously by Emalahleni Local Municipality.

Thabang Makhufe chairperson for Ecufe outlined that although he is disappointed in the turnout and participation from the community, he is overall happy with the response provided by Executive Mayor of Emalahleni Local Municipality Clr Conny Nkalitshana.

The chairperson further outlined that the submission of the memorandum to the municipal offices was a great success, and pleaded for local and surrounding contractors, mines, and companies to come together under one roof and discuss future developments for Emalahleni to secure jobs for residents.

The memorandum further advocated for hands-on participation from the Executive Mayor’s office.

The chairperson called for an immediate intervention of the municipality based on the issue of water in Emalahleni, “The municipality should not overlook the issue of water in Ezinambeni, Klarinet, and surrounding areas and wait for the communities to take action,” he said.

He further emphasised the issue of job opportunities being given to unworthy candidates, “The municipality should stop implementing old structures and put in place young and active people who know exactly what the youth in our communities need,” he explained.

The march was held outside the municipal offices on the Friday morning of January 20.

Emalahleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Clr Conny Nkalitshana commended members of Ecufe for successfully executing a peaceful march.

She also explained that the municipality does not condone marches that will prevent learners from attending school or vandalising of infrastructure. “When my office showed me the poster of the march that will be taking place, I suggested that we, as Emalahleni Local Municipality engage participants and that is what we are here to do today, with your help of course,” the mayor outlined.

Clr Nkalisthana explained in detail that she met with members of Ecufe on Tuesday, January 17 for a ‘fruitful’ meeting, “We are not going to fix the issues outlined in the memorandum as a municipality, but together as a community. We are going to have another meeting where we will sit and discuss responses to the issues in the memorandum. This will indicate the progress we are making by working hand in hand,” said Clr Nkalitshana.

She also expressed her gratitude to the community for communicating with her.

The mayor assured residents that their memorandum has been accepted and that the issues of service delivery will be dealt with immediately. “I’ve heard that Ecufe is doing good for the community comrades. I am happy with the way you are enforcing discipline. Let us continue to reclaim and rebuild our city,” Clr Nkalitshana motivated.
