SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit arrests police captain for alleged extortion, corruption and assault

The three suspects allegedly took 13 undocumented persons at their work premises, a construction site in eMalahleni, into custody and demanded a R10 000 bribe for their release.

Three suspects including a female police captain were arrested on charges of corruption, defeating the ends of justice, extortion, and assault.

On Monday, January 9, one female and two males were arrested in eMalahleni.

The three suspects allegedly took 13 undocumented persons at their work premises, a construction site in eMalahleni, into custody and demanded a R10 000 bribe for their release.

The trio then allegedly also demanded money from the business owner for their release.

After a few hours, the funds were raised and paid to the police captain and the two assailants, and that is when the suspects were arrested by the SAPS Mpumalanga Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.

The money exchanged has also been confiscated from the suspects as part of the investigation.

The suspects appeared before Witbank Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, January 10 on charges of extortion, one count of corruption, and one count of assault intending to cause grievous bodily harm.

Each of the suspects has been granted R2000 bail and is expected to appear in the same court again on March 1.

The investigation is still ongoing. Internal investigations surrounding the incident against the female captain will also be conducted, whereby disciplinary steps may be taken pending the outcome.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has welcomed the arrest of the three suspects. Manamela also wants to warn members to stay away from involving themselves in corrupt activities as it would land them in hot waters. “We cannot allow ourselves to be associated with corruption and the law will have to take its course against such who break the law, including those within our ranks without fear or favour,” warned Manamela.
