Teach A Boy Child NPO in Ackerville to prioritise mental health

Many individuals shared their shared their journey of living with disability and albinism alongside members of the LGBTQ + Community.

Teach A Boy Child and What’s Up Raise Your Voice’s Mental Health launched an outreach program to commemorate and recognise October as Mental Health Month.

The purpose of the event was to bring about awareness to the lives of young men that are lately becoming statistics of suicide because of mental-related issues that aren’t being well addressed.

The Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) partnered with The Children’s Radio Foundations What’s Up Raise Your Voice from Emalahleni FM to circulate mental wellness knowledge and information.

NPO Director Siya Mokoena expressed that he is honoured to be a part of a programme that aims to teach boys much better than being perpetrators, “As we wrap up mental health month, we are glad to have been able to host a session with the boys. The aim is to host more events and monthly commemorations. Next month we will be hosting a Gender-Based Violence event and would encourage the public at large to support just like our various sponsors supported us with today’s event,” Siya mentioned.

The Mental Health Awareness Event at Emrabulweni Corner in Ackerville was attended by numerous psychologists and Child Welfare Social Auxiliary worker Mbali Mnisi who explained in detail what mental health is.

Dr Mandla Mhlanga is a clinical psychologist who outlined when and where to get help. He further brought forward and clarified the myths and facts associated with mental health, especially when it comes to the boy child.

Many young individuals shared their stories on Saturday, October 29 like members of the LGBTQ + and others who shared their journey of living with disability and albinism were among the guest speakers who spoke about some difficulties they encountered and how it affected their mental health.

Teach A Boy Child provided tips on how to deal with mental illnesses:

  1. Focus on self-compassion over self-improvement.
  2. Set (and keep) your boundaries.
  3. Practice forgiveness.
  4. Ask for help.
