Active ageing for senior citizens

Puma Stadium helps the elderly stay active.

Elderly people from the six municipalities in the Nkangala district gather at the Puma Stadium to compete in the golden games.

The games were held on Tuesday, September 6.

They competed in running in short and long distances and other games were played as well.

They competed in athletics, duck walking, soccer, jukskei and dress-up.

The district compromise of six municipalities which are: Victor Khanye, Emalahleni, Steve Tshwete, Emakhazeni, Thembisile Hani and Dr JS Moroka.

The games are aimed at encouraging physical and mental health amongst the senior citizens and are attended by members of elderly forums from across the different municipalities.

This highlight on the calendar promotes exercise, creates an opportunity to socialise with friends, old and new and gets the muscles pumping, all sprinkled with healthy competition.

Senior citizens are encouraged to get into the habit of practising physical activity and promote active ageing as part of the aim to improve quality of life and health.

Winners of the games in the district will compete in the provincial competitions, and then take part in the national competition in which all nine provinces will compete for the top honours.
