Taxi accident on the N4 – cause still unknown

Four passengers suffered serious injuries.

Sixteen learners were taken to hospital last Tuesday after the taxi they were passengers in was involved in an accident near the Ferrobank off-ramp on the N4.

Bophelo Emergency Medical Services transported 11 patients to the hospital, one of which was seriously injured.

Langamed Emergency Management transported two patients who suffered injuries of a serious nature to the hospital.

One of the patients suffered a head injury and the other leg fractures.

Legacy Emergency Medical Services transported one patient to the hospital who did not suffer any serious injuries.

According to a paramedic of ER24 that was on the scene, two patients were transported by them to the hospital, one of which suffered a head injury.

The accident is believed to be the result of a tyre burst on the left side of the taxi.

The driver allegedly lost control and went off the road, whereafter the taxi rolled.

According to Janeldi Botha, a paramedic from Legacy Emergency Medical Services who was on the scene, all the relevant authorities were present.

When asked for advice for road users who find themselves in an accident, she replied: “In my opinion, people who find themselves on the scene of an accident must remain calm.

They must also not move the patients around because they could have serious injuries that may be further complicated when moved.”

Arrive Alive suggests the following safety tips, among others, when on the road: Make sure that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before departure.

Have numbers for roadside assistance and other emergencies close at hand or saved on your cellphone so that you are well-prepared for any eventuality.

Determine the extent of damages or injuries in the event of an accident, and assess whether or not medical attention is required.

Drivers must always keep the safety of other road users in mind because their actions behind the wheel may shift the gears in someone else’s life.
