Community members arrested for murder after allegedly taking the law into their own hands

Police warn the public not to take the law into their own hands.

According to Witbank Police spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall, three community members were arrested following a murder yesterday.

The incident happened on Montgomery Avenue, Extension 5.

According to information received by police, an eyewitness saw two men breaking into a room at a house and placing stolen items into a grey Hyundai Tucson.

The eyewitness immediately contacted the caretaker of the property, who arrived at the scene within minutes.

As the caretaker entered the premises, he saw the two men in the Tucson trying to leave the scene. He blocked the vehicle, but both men got out and ran.

He managed to catch one of them.

The caretaker together with other community members searched the Tucson and found a flat-screen television, a Proline notebook and clothing.

The found property was suspected to be stolen from one of the tenants’ rooms in the house.

The suspected thief was taken to the back of the house where he was allegedly severely assaulted by members of the community.

He died on the scene.

Station commander of Witbank South African Police Service, Brigadier Moses Bolton, warned that the public should not take the law into their own hands when they execute civilian arrests.

Instead, the public should hand over the suspect/s to the police immediately after the arrest and allow the law to take its course.

The three suspects, aged 37, 35, and 30, will appear in Witbank Magistrate’s Court on September 1.
