As part of the youth month mayoral outreach programme, the executive mayor in partnership with the Duster Maloka Foundation honoured and pay homage to the fallen heroes.

The Executive Mayor of Emalahleni Local Municipality Clr Connie Nkalitshane together with families, ANC members, and military veterans visited different cemeteries to honour the fallen heroes.

They started at Kromdraai Cemetery, Extension 5 Cemetery, Ekuphumuleni and last was the Pretoria Memorial Park Cemetery, on Saturday, June 18.

It was emphasised that the freedom did not come on a silver platter; June 16, 1976 student’s uprising was a turning point in the national liberation struggle discourse and it placed the future of this great nation firmly in the hands of the young people and it was not the commemoration of bravery of the youth of June 16 fighting for their freedom defending the land of their forefathers.

It was also said the programme will be used to mobilise society to expand and resource youth leadership development and economic empowerment programmes.

“No young person must sit at home because he or she doesn’t have money to go to school; local companies must share with us their skills development targets or HRD targets. Job creation is our apex priority. All local companies, including government, and municipality must ring fence job opportunities for young people, community based job creation initiatives (recycling, township economy, and self-help projects). Enterprise development, incubation that is supplier development and localization. Young people must come into the main stream economy and not just to supply water and stationary. Set aside percentage for young people is non-negotiable,” reads a statement from the programme.

It was also said that the programme will heighten the fight against substance and drug abuse, GBV and femicide and human trafficking. Resuscitating culture, sports and recreation as more cultural and sporting facilities are needed.

“Forward with education, forward with skills development, forward with skills development programmes and forward with economic empowerment of young people, the youth is the future and the future is the youth,” ended the statement.

The families of the fallen heroes were presented with blankets.
