Witbank High has winning chess players

The biggest lesson learned on Saturday was that chess is not played by hands but with the mind.

Witbank High School’s chess players were good in the game this past weekend at the Wafa Wafa Chess tournament.

On June 4 the eMalahleni Chess Academy’s u.17s made their moves at Emrabulweni Park in Ackerville.

The tournament had 70 players from 13 different schools around eMalahleni that took part.

Bonginsimbi’s Thabang Makhubela took third place; second place went to Witbank High as Prayer Philias only lost one game in the whole tournament with 16-year-old Bavuseni Ngwenya from Witbank High emerging victoriously with a perfect record winning all five rounds.

Bavuseni who is from Ezinambeni said he only started playing the game earlier this year; he uses chess as a stress reliever.

The Grade 11 learner believes chess can unite people and teach about life, as it’s more of a ‘mind game’.

The organiser of the event Yeye Masilela said the tournament will be held every month going forward to develop players as they already had 20 beginners at the tournament, so they look to build on that going forward.
