Local team Coal City Wizards were unfortunate to have a bad start when they lost by a narrow margin to University of Johannesburg (UJ).

The game was played at the Puma Stadium on Saturday, April 23.

UJ were the first team to try and penetrate City Wizards and UJ Refilwe Maseko missed a chance to open with a goal, but her shot was off the mark.

City Wizards’ downfall was their poor passing when going forward.

City Wizards player Leseti Mokoena created a scoring chance, but her captain Makgotso Lepota missed.

UJ used the wings effectively with crosses.

Lepota tried to bulldoze her way through the tight UJ defence by Shannon Mocomo and Kabelo Mokoena with no luck.

Wizards Leseti nearly scored with a low shot, but it was saved and UJ Nomathamsanga Sikweza tried towards the end of the first half to increase the score, but she failed.

In the second half, Wizards were playing much better with more attacks while trying to find an equaliser.

A corner kick was well saved by UJ keeper Elizabeth Mazivise. Both teams made some substitutes and Wizards were more effectively going forward.

Wizard’s Celokuhe Mabizela was in the picture with a shot which went over the bar.

Wizards had a place kick towards the end of the match, but it was saved by Mazivise.

The first weekend of action in the Hollywoodbets Super League proved to have plenty of action.

In the other games played, things were much closer.

Ma-Indies Ladies showed plenty of fight, going down 2-1 against inaugural Hollywoodbets Super League and African Champions, Sundowns Ladies.

The two newly-promoted teams, City Lads Ladies and Vasco da Gama, each went down 2-1 against UWC and Bloem Celtic respectively.

There were also wins for Thunderbirds (2-1) against Golden Ladies.
