Constant rain is a problem for some residents in Masakhane

Residents have been overwhelmed by the instant floods in their homes and yards.

Masakhane is one of the areas that was affected by constant rain over the weekend which caused several homes to flood.

According to ward councillor Sydney Tjaji, there were about seven houses affected over the weekend.

“I called the disaster management unit to come and assist the people who were affected by the rain in Masakhane”.

Zandile Maseko’s home was one of the houses that were flooded, which had a severe impact on them because it had ruined everything in their home.

Zandile said the rain had begun to immerse their home on Monday, April 4, and the heavy rain that occurred made it worse in the early hours of Saturday, April 9 as their home was engulfed with water.

The councillor called the TLB and a machine to drain the water, which only drained for a few minutes, and said they would return because they didn’t have petrol, but they never did.

Banele Maseko said that they used buckets to remove the water from the house and homes are always flooded when it rains.

The rain that fell this weekend submerged their home once more.

“This time it wasn’t too bad, but you can’t walk in sandals; you need gumboots.”

She concluded by saying a pipe must be installed in front of the gate or get an RDP because most of the items were messed up.

The street is narrow, and water flows to the side because the street lacks drainage, which is one of the reasons homes are flooded, said Mr Tjaji.

Busi Phagisa, who is also affected, mentioned that the conditions are very bad because the water has ruined furniture and the fridge does not work. It is not the first time their homes are being flooded.

When the councillor arrived to inspect the situation; he stated that they need to relocate.

“It’s been years since I have attempted to address the problem; I have two ideas for how to resolve it, but one of them will cost a lot of money. My job is to address such issues; once everything is settled, I will get started. It has been going on for 15 years, so we need a permanent solution, we cannot return to the same situation,” Cllr Tjatji concluded.
