Illegal mining in Schoongezicht gets an uppercut

Illegal mining is a thriving business on the Highveld.

Fourteen suspects are appearing in Witbank Magistrate’s Court today on charges of illegal mining and fraud after they produced a fraudulent certificate for mining.

The men were arrested during an intelligence-driven operation at the Schoongezicht coal dump on January 19.

During the operation, 17 men were taken for questioning, and three were released afterwards.

Mining machinery and cars were confiscated during the operation.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela has commended and appreciated the efforts of the SAPS members and the security agencies in the fight against illegal mining in the province.

She warned the community not to be involved in any illegal mining as this affects the economy of the country.
