No more illegal dumping in Ward 20 will be tolerated

Cllr Maureen Scheepers and other volunteers took it upon themselves to clean up one of the many illegal dumping sites in Ward 20.

Illegal dumping sites in eMalahleni are a huge problem, especially in Ward 20, but starting at a point, this issue is being handled by the newly elected Ward Councillor, Cllr Maureen Scheepers.

On Saturday, January 8, Cllr Scheepers took it upon herself to clean up one of the many illegal dumping sites in Ward 20.

“I think people use this part of eMalahleni as dumping grounds because there are many open fields and of course the gravel road situated between Blancheville and Jackaroo Park, also known as the ‘SPCA’ road,” she explained.

Cllr Scheepers further stated, since she was elected she has confronted numerous residents when found dumping.

“What is most shocking to me is that most of the people I have found dumping are actually residents of the area and with every single person that I’ve approached, all say the same thing: ‘but everyone dumps here, so why can’t I?’ I will make a point of using the roads that people frequently dump and I see illegal dumping taking place daily. These people are reported and receive fines for illegal dumping from the relevant departments,” she added.

One of these dumping sites was cleaned up by Cllr Scheepers and some volunteers.

The area was not only cleaned up but the grass was cut at one of the entrances of Blancheville in Second Avenue.

This road is used for dumping as it has become less travelled after the bridge washed away in 2016 and has not been rebuilt. The area around the bridge that washed away has become a very large dumping ground.

“I have a job to do, and like I have stated before I am here to work and to make Ward 20 great again, this will no longer be the forgotten ward. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty and will help wherever I can,” Cllr Scheepers concluded.
