Nkangala district commissioner calls on businesses and community to be vigilant to curb ATM bombings

Major General Lentsoane is requesting the community to work closely with police to stop ATM bombings.

District Commissioner Major General Lilly Lentsoane is calling on businesses and communities to be extra vigilant with a view to curb criminality, with special emphasis on Automated Teller Machines (ATM).

The call by General Lentsoane emanates from sporadic ATM bombings that have taken place during this period of time, the latest being in Hendrina where two ATM’s were bombed on November 2 at approximately 18:45.

Even though the suspects did not get any money, extensive damage was reported which caused the community to bear the brunt of not being able to use the machines.

According to information, police in Hendrina attended a scene where it was reported that ATM’s were bombed at the KwaZamokuhle Taxi Rank shops.

When they arrived, indeed the report was confirmed. Apparently three suspects who were traveling in a black BMW with no registration number, bombed the ATM’s and after realizing that they could not find any money, they then diverted their plan to one of the shops nearby where they robbed it of an undisclosed amount of cash.

General Lentsoane is requesting the community as well as businesses to work closely with police to stop these violent types of crimes.

She said this can be possible if active community policing can be implemented wherein communities give pro-active information to police and also report suspicious motor vehicles.

“Let us work together to make sure that our places are safe and if you see any suspicious vehicle or people roaming your streets, be that within the residential or business areas, please alert police urgently whilst they (police) also continue to intensify their visibility. We can be able to arrest these suspects and stop crime before it happens,” said Major General Lilly Lentsoane.

Currently police are requesting the community to assist in locating the people responsible for the two bombed ATM’s in Hendrina.

Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects is requested to contact Detective Warrant Officer Aaron Magagula at 082 303 9899.
