Increase in hijackings at homes ‘are quite alarming’ says police

These cases are quite alarming as victims don’t feel safe in their own homes

Reports of victims being hijacked at home are rising by the day.

This is a serious concern to police because victims and their children are left traumatized and in danger of future robberies.

On Friday, September 17, a victim who would like to remain anonymous lost his car as he was going out in the early hours of the morning.

Three men approached him as he was exiting his residence and ambushed him.

One of the suspects had a firearm yet no one was harmed.

They got into the car and drove with the man.

“They dropped me off near Blova Street without saying a word and just drove off; I immediately called the police,” he added.

Witbank SAPS media spokesperson, Sgt. David Ratau said that these cases are quite alarming as victims don’t feel safe in their own homes.

“I would advise people to not leave their cars open when they open or close their gates. If you need to do so, rather lock your car then go attend to the gate. Criminals see it as an opportunity to attack when you leave your cars open,” he said.

“I would also like to advise them to be vigilant of their surroundings. If you see any suspicious men around your neighbourhood, call your CPF unit or the police on: 013 655 5052.
