N4 Highway – the hotspot for robberies

All road users are urged to not travel in this area at night if it is possible as the number of armed robbery cases opened at Witbank Police Station is increasing daily.

The past week it came to light that more and more robberies are occurring on the N4 Highway between Mpumalanga and Gauteng as the suspects use obstacles to get the vehicle to a standstill.

“Please be vigilant if you are travelling from Pretoria to eMalahleni as an armed robbery next to the N4 highway occurred earlier, where a lady got a flat tyre and pulled off. It is believed that the armed robbers use objects that they place on the road to catch their next victim.

The objects placed on the road are to give road users a flat tyre and as soon as they pull over, the armed men rob the people from their belongings,” a warning on the Mpumalanga traffic channel on Zello stated.

All road users are urged to not travel in this area at night if it is possible as the number of armed robbery cases opened at Witbank Police Station is increasing daily.

“It has become clear that there is an ongoing risk in travelling the N4 highway at night, centred near eMalahleni, including the N4 from Middelburg to Pretoria. Armed suspects have on multiple occasions brought cars to a standstill by puncturing tyres with caltrops (road spikes), and robbed occupants at gunpoint,” spokesperson Sgt David Ratau from Witbank Police Station said.

He added that should you need to travel at night, to be extra vigilant and have your passengers also keep a lookout for any suspicious activities near or on the roads or overhead bridges. Drive with caution to be able to avoid obstacles in the road.

“Always keep emergency numbers nearby as when an issue occurs you can get immediate assistance and reduce to a safe travelling speed and try not to stop under any circumstances until safe,” he concluded.
